Bathurst Methodist Church

Bathurst Methodist Church
Built by Samuel Bradshaw, this church opened in 1832 and was besieged in the frontier wars. The church was originally constructed with a thatch roof, and the porch is a later addition. According to Jeremiah Goldswain's family bible, it is said that a trench connected the two churches in the 1846 war.

Bathurst Primary School
The original building, according to 1820 maps, show the land to be "Gov Camp and lot 64, leased to the school". Rev Boardman started the church school in the Old Drosty, and moved the school to it's current location in 1827, when it was known as the Bathurst Grammar and Mathematical School. In 1830, there were 51 scholars at the school.

Big Pineapple
The big pineapple is 16.7m high and has 3 floors. It is the biggest pineapple in the world! The ground floor has a gift shop full of pineapple goodies such as jams and chutneys, locally made pottery and puzzles as well as t-shirts and hats to name but a few of the items for sale ideal for overseas and local tourists looking for that small gift to take home!
Summerhill Farm was originally allocated to the 1820 Settler Charles Crause and part of the original 1825 homestead has been restored and houses the Packshed Restaurant. In 1833, John Hawkins, who was a founder member of the Bathurst Agricultural Society, purchased the farm for 2,000 pounds. He was also one of the first farmers to plant pineapples.

Bleak House
A beautiful old Settler Home, with exquisite yellow wood floors. Built for Lt. Alexander Bisset and restored by Brigidier Nauhaus in 1883. It was later occupied by Gen. Sir John Bisset. It was now used as a coffee shop known as the Whistling Kettle. Bleak House was built around 1825.

Great Fish Pont Lighthouse

Great Fish Pont Lighthouse
9 metre octagonal masonry tower painted with vertical black and white stripes, installed on 1 July 1898 and situated at Great Fish Point near the mouth of the Great Fish River a mere 25 km from the coastal holiday resort of Port Alfred. The establishment of this lighthouse arose out of a recommendation from the Lighthouse Commission of the time appointed by the Governor of the Cape Colonial Government in 1890.
The construction of the lighthouse was delayed and was only lit on 1 July 1898. The 9 metre octagonal masonry tower painted in vertical Black and white stripes is situated 76 metres above sea level and is approximately 800 metres from the shoreline. The light flashes once every 10 seconds and has an approximate candle power of 5 000 000 candelas with a range of 32 sea miles. The cost of the building was ?10 000-155-0-2 Sterling and the Light Type Revolving Electric Light Character 1 flash every 10 seconds

St Johns Anglican Church
Oldest Anglican Church in SA. A sanctuary in the frontier wars for hundreds of settlers. Designed by Major Mitchel R.E. and built by Samuel Bradshaw. Served as a military garrison and temporary shelter for settler families in 1834. The church was completed in 1837. Bishop Gray consecrated the church on 19th October 1848.

The toposcope marks the spot where the 1820 Settlers locations were surveyed. 57 bronze plaques record details of settlements. On a clear day you can see the Fish River to Kwaaihoek. The stones on the wall were taken from ruins of original Settler homes.
